BET YOU DIDN'T KNOWThe Old Fashioned is one of the excellent cocktails you can enjoy at this cool masterclass at The Club, one of Sydney's best cocktail bars. This is one of the classic cocktails, with a history that goes back to the dawn of cocktail bars. A bourbon-based drink, The Old Fashioned also contains simple syrup, a combination of water and dissolved sugar, bitters, a twist of citrus rind, and perhaps a cherry as a garnish.
Cocktail historians trace the first use of the name "Old Fashioned" for a bourbon drink to the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen's club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. Some say the recipe was invented by the club bartender in honour of bourbon distiller Colonel James E. Pepper. Pepper then brought the cocktail to the famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City, thus increasing its ubiquity.
More recently, The Old Fashioned has been featured on the popular American television show Mad Men, where it is the preferred drink of the main character, Don Draper. So it looks like The Old Fashion is back in fashion! You can taste this drink and more at this awesome Sydney cocktail class at The Club.
